A long-time DJ favourite, this track is from African Head Charge’s debut album. The titular Stebeni leads a call-and-response chant over a typically hypnotic percussion track from AHC mastermind Bonjo. Recalls Adrian: “The studio was off Clerkenwell Road, on Berry Street. It was a studio underneath the ground. We were just in there chainsmoking; it was really unhealthy. A dungeon, really. Brian Eno & David Byrne had an album called My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, so I called mine My Life In A Hole In The Ground. And he kept talking about vision of a psychedelic Africa, so we called it African Head Charge. It wasn’t really taking the piss out of Eno. I think he thought we were laughing at him - it was having a laugh, but respectfully.”
