about

There are many larger-than-life characters in the story of On-U Sound, but perhaps the most outrageous of all is Alan Pellay (aka Al Pillay). Born in Grimsby, with a performing career that started on the cabaret circuit of Northern working mans clubs. The track featured here started life as part of the repertoire of the band I Scream Pleasures (who frequently opened for The Fall). In it's studio incarnation it became the unique mixture of twitchy funk, echoing percussion and seethingly angry vocals that you can hear on this compilation. Later on, alter ego Lana Pellay recorded Hi-NRG disco hit “Pistol In My Pocket” with the nascent Stock, Aitken & Waterman production team (at the time on a mid-80s roll of pink pounders with the likes of Divine and Dead Or Alive and pre-dating the far straighter mainstream pop of Rick Astley et al). A parallel career in TV incorporated appearances in Channel 4's Comic Strip series and a number of presenting gigs on late night shows. A close friend of Leigh Bowery, Al was a frequent performer at the groundbreaking Taboo club night, and has gone onto to enjoy a theatrical career that blends performance art and traditional theatre, most recently playing the role of Welsh singer Dorothy Squires in the play Mrs. Roger Moore.
