A million miles away from their more roots-oriented (but still great) later releases such as Stoned Immaculate and Echomania, “Drilling Equipment” appears to be more of a vehicle for Adrian and Kishi to push the possibility of dub into a very dark and unexplored subway of the mind, it’s saturated textures hiding an impressive level of rhythmic detail. Whilst defying easy categorisation, there are some parallels with the work of prolific Mancunian producer Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze, as well as some of the more leftfield work issued by the Hyperdub label. This track was issued on a tape only release for the ROIR label of NYC, who also released crucial early work by the likes of Bad Brains, Suicide and Einstürzende Neubauten.
