about

A tune with a long and chequered history - “Kunta Kinte” was originally cut by Channel One house band The Revolutionaries in 1976. It got picked up by UK audiences as one of the famous dub plates rinsed by Jah Shaka on his mighty sound system, with provenance much debated over the years. Mad Professor recorded his own version in the early 80s which has made appearances in numerous, increasingly mutated forms, on his long-running series of dub albums. The title comes from the story of a man from Gambia who was sold into American slavery in the Eighteenth century and had his foot cut off by his masters for attempting to escape, and has recently inspired Kendrick Lamar on his own “King Kunta” single. The On-U version was cut by Singers & Players, a loose collective of musicians and mainly ex-pat Jamaican vocalists who made five albums between 1981 and 1988. A vocal version featuring Prince Far I appeared on the Staggering Heights album as “Autobiography”, and a previously unreleased version with a completely different lyric has recently emerged on the latest instalment in On-U’s disco plate series as “Calling Over The Distant Sea”.
