Rumoured in some quarters to be the work of an incognito John Lydon, The Chicken Granny was in fact conceived by early On-U associate Dennis Brady, concocting this haunting slice of martial skronk with members of The Pop Group and Rip, Rig & Panic. The only recording known to exist of this artist, it appeared on the first ever On-U Sound compilation, Wild Paarty Sounds, a typically eclectic selection of tracks that stretched from Jamaican toaster Jah Woosh to the deep strangeness of Jeb Loy & The Oil Wells. Brady and Chris Garland were involved in bringing Prince Far I to their hometown of Cheltenham on his ‘Roots Encounter’ tour, hooking up with Adrian Sherwood in the process. Garland ran the 4D Rhythms label and booking agency with Sherwood, whilst Brady is the person responsible for coming up with the On-U Sound name. He also provided a set of wheels for the fledgling label, which proved useful until he drove into the back of an unimpressed Dr. Alimantado!
